The more remote six mile section of the trail between May Canyon and House Creek Campground will close annually from December 1 st to May 1 st. The one mile section of the trail from Dolores to May Canyon will close annually to all public use from December 1 st to April 15 th. The trailhead is located immediately east of the 1.1 mile long. The McPhee Overlook Trail has seasonal restrictions that go into effect December 1 st of each year, to protect critical winter habitat for deer and elk. The Canyon Overlook Trail is one of Zions classics that is well advertised by the park. Please allow time for the trail to dry after rainstorms, typically about 24 hrs after a storm. Please note: The soils in area have a high clay content and are prone to damage from use when wet. Near House Creek Campground the trail turns to the north and travels an additional 3 miles through pinon, juniper and sage brush to its terminus at the Little Bean Canyon Trail #198 providing access to the greater Boggy Draw trail system. The terrain between Dolores and House Creek CG alternates between open mesa tops with great views of McPhee Reservoir and large side drainages with interesting rock features. The trail begins by immediately climbing 100ft via several switchbacks passing by several interesting rock features along the way to the mesa top overlooking McPhee Reservoir. Tips of Navajo Sandstone domes poke out from behind cliffs of Wingate Sandstone to the north. The trail passes by the House Creek Campground and terminates at the Little Bean Canyon Trail #198 providing access to the greater Boggy Draw trail system. This is a non-motorized trail starting in the Town of Dolores. Total ride time can range from 30 minutes to an hour. There are also some nice bridges over wet areas.

It has nice punchy climbs and fun flowing downhills. This is a very fun trail that is used heavily by locals. Access is also available from the House Creek Campground. The trail starts at the entrance to the entrance to the Jamestown Reservoir Swimming Beach - look for a sign at the trailhead. The trail head is on your right just before the cemetery. As you enter town from the west on HWY 145 turn left just past the fire station then take and immediate left onto the frontage road.
